This Glossary explains the research that can be identified by using the search terms available in the Advanced Search on this site. If any of the terms are still unclear, or you are uncertain which search term covers your query, please Contact the Network Team.

Economic Issues | Environmental issues | Governance | Innovation | Social / cultural issues
Economic Issues
Productivity & profitability - covers issues that include reducing business costs; benefits of training; using business models; accounting procedures; operational research; employee benefits and corporate social responsibility, as well as other relevant research.

Industry fragmentation

- covers issues addressing the fragmentation of the construction industry (i.e. diversity, flexible working, etc.).

Supply chains & partnerships

- covers issues that include the development and strengthening of supply chains and partnerships within the industry to enhance the use of local suppliers and improve the quality, stability and continuity of building project teams. Some research in this area uses examples from other industries to show best practices.

Keeping business for Wales, in Wales

- covers research describing how to build a more locally based industry to counter problems of divergence of industry out of Wales.

Recycled materials: specification and use

- covers issues that include increasing the demand for recycled materials within the construction industry (including materials suitable for purpose, how to specify for recycled materials, use of indigenous materials, research into novel materials and their use within the industry).

Investment strategies - covers issues dealing with investment strategies for the construction industry e.g. PFI and public-private partnerships. Some research in this area uses examples from other industries to show best practices

Enviromental issues
Improvement of working practice - covers issues that relate to improving the overall performance of the industry in its operations e.g. considering issues such as logistics, source and use of local materials, use of renewable materials and offsite construction (prefabrication).

Resource efficiency and reducing waste

– covers issues that include waste minimisation, waste segregation, recycling, storage practices, inventory control, and efficient use of raw materials.

Improvement of building performance

– covers issues that include all aspects of improving the environmental performance of a building from construction to subsequent use, including reduction of CO2 emissions and consideration of new legislation.

Landscaping

– covers all issues pertaining to hard and soft (vegetation) landscaping in and around buildings.

Climate change – covers all issues pertaining to climate change related to the construction industry (including energy, water and materials use). Some research in this area considers general climate change issues to identify best practices for industry.

Governance
Addressing forthcoming legislation – covers issues that include barriers, opportunities and innovative schemes to deal with forthcoming EU legislation and its implementation in the United Kingdom. Certain research centres have a specific focus of looking at implementation issues within Wales (under the Welsh Assembly Government).

Environmental Impact Assessment / Strategic Environmental Assessment

– covers all issues relating to these two topics. Environmental Impact Assessment is a tool that deals with the effects of a new development and ensuring that these are considered before the development progresses (1). Strategic Environmental Assessment is a tool used widely to support sustainable development, and seeks to ensure that significant environmental effects arising from policies, plans and programmes are addressed, mitigated and communicated (2).

Impact of regulation – covers issues that include the impact of regulation on the industry, from governance, economic, social and environmental points of view.

Government procurement – covers issues that include Governments procurement strategies, and the impact of these on industry. Some research will also cover the impact of Governmental procurement from a social, economic and environmental point of view.

Innovation
Biotechnology – the use of micro-organisms for beneficial effect (3). For industrial applications, research can cover issues relating to pollution, health, micro-organisms fir for purpose, etc.

Nanotechnology

– covers issues that consider activities at the level of atoms and molecules, as well as research into areas such as precision engineering, electronics, electromechanical systems and biomedical applications (4). For industrial applications, the latter areas are considered.

Material technology – covers issues that relate to materials, their properties and uses in differing contexts. For industrial applications in construction, properties of various materials are considered for their purpose and use, including issues relating to recycled materials, use of waste materials and properties of composite materials compared to standard materials.

Engineering solutions

– covers issues that include the use of engineering in simple, advanced, novel and innovative ways to deal with specific problems.

Social/cultural issues
Building design – covers issues that relate to those aspects of building design and adaptation relating to occupiers’ present and future needs (designing for adaptability).

Training

– highlights which research centres offer training (to specified levels) as part of their other activities. When requesting further information, please specify your training needs in order to allow the research centre to assist you with your enquiry.

Health & Safety

– covers issues that are related to research into Health & Safety issues for site, office, transport and storage operations.

Equal opportunities

– covers issues relating to equal opportunities including gender and disabled issues within the construction industry, for compliance as well as industry image, recruitment, retention and skills of staff. Some research in this area uses examples from other industries to show best practices.

Black & Minority Ethnic Issues

– covers issues relating to the issues of black & minority ethnic staff within the construction industry for compliance as well as industry image, recruitment, retention and skills of. Some research in this area uses examples from other industries to show best practices.

Bilingual issues

– covers issues of the Welsh language use within Wales and the construction industry. Some research in this area uses examples from other industries to show best practices.
